My Top Ten Summer Destinations

If the weather is not enough to whisper summer into your ears, I suggest going to any gym and see how packed it is. Around this time, people start trying to lose the pounds they have gained since Christmas. And in a few weeks, it will not just be the gym that's crowded but beaches and other summer destinations, as well.

There really is no better time that's best for traveling than during the summer months. From March to May, the likelihood of a typhoon ruining a much-awaited vacation is almost 0%. But it's not just storms we should avoid during vacations but the hassle of having to be in a very crowded place, as well. And, if you are allergic to a big crowd, never plan your vacation during the Holy Week.

I created a list of not-so-popular destinations that might not be very crowded this summer. These are my personal favorites.

El Nido
El Nido
- El Nido is a place to visit. The beaches there are all magnificent, even the one that's near the highway. Island hopping could never be more exciting with the emerald green waters, the fine white sand and colorful fishes you can see. Electricity and Internet connectivity might be limited, but that adds to the rustic atmosphere that fills this town at the tip of Palawan.

Batanes
Batanes
- If you want to experience how Julie Andrews must have felt dancing while singing The Sound of Music, then Batanes is the destination for you. The wind-swept mountains, the rolling hills, and the amazing beaches will drive the selfie addicts nuts. If you are into landscape photography, you will have your fill, as every turn of the roads in Batanes is a beautiful surprise.

Coron
Coron
- Coron is a very quiet town in Busuanga. Although it does not have its own beach, the town itself is an attraction. If you are looking for a place to enjoy some peace and quiet, then Coron should be your destination. While at it, you can have fresh and delicious seafoods. You may even bring some of them to your island-hopping adventure. The island beaches are another reason for you not to miss this summer destination.

Calaguas
Calaguas
- Calaguas' long, powdery, white sand beach will surely blow you away. The clear blue-green water will make a lasting impression, as it gives Boracay a worthy competition. An added attraction is the fact that you will be sleeping in camping tents, since there are no accommodations at the beach yet. Calaguas could get crowded during the Holy Week, so if you want the white beach and the clear water all to yourself, plan to go there before or after the holidays.

Palaui Island

Palaui Island
- Just off the coast of Sta. Ana, Cagayan, Palaui Island is gaining popularity because of the scenic view at the light house- Cape Engano. You may also do some trekking (to the amazing waterfalls) or just lie down at the beautiful beach for some peace.

Mt. Daraitan and Tinipak River
- It would be a shame to complete the list without including at least one mountain in it. I usually avoid hiking during summer time on account of the heat, but Mt. Daraitan and Tinipak are just simply irresistible. Hiking Mt. Daraitan is already a reward in itself, especially once you get to the peak. After a tiring trek, you can then dip into the cool and clear water of Tinipak River. It also does not take a long time to get there, so it's perfect for a weekend vacation.

Sagada
Sagada
- Sagada is a perfect place for nature lovers. It is also a place for those who like to hike, read and write. If you want something more adventurous, you could go caving and see the beautiful Sumaguing Cave or the Crystal cave there, too. Sagada is also known for its chilly climate, so if the summer's too warm for you, forget Baguio and go all the way to Sagada.

Kwebang Lampas
Kwebang Lampas
- Kwebang Lampas is just 4 hours away from Manila, so if you do not want to go far, this would be a great destination. This cove boasts of fine white sand and clear emerald green water. This is definitely better than Pagudpud. There are no accommodations in the island, so you will need to camp in tents if you stay overnight.

Poctoy Beach, Marinduque
Marinduque
- Marinduque is a lovely island off the coast of Batangas. Perfect time to visit would be during Holy Thursday and Good Friday when the Moriones festival is held. While there, you may climb Mt. Malindig and have a stunning view of Tres Reyes islands around sunset. You may also try out Malbog hot spring and Poctoy beach. Caving is another activity that you may do in the island.

Nagsasa
Nagsasa
- If you are sick of your friends raving about Anawangin and how beautiful it is, you may opt to go to Nagsasa instead. Like Anawangin, Nagsasa is a cove that has pine trees at its beach. In fact, I think that this place is even better than the more popular Anawangin because of the sand bar and the smaller crowd. On your way back, you can do a side trip to Capones and other nearby islands.
